Learning to do media stuff at Amarillo College I took a Radio Production class that let me gain hands on training of being on a radio station as well as the marketing methods associated with brand.
Roughly midway through my semester I got to do a contest on air and give away tickets to go see Blue October live in concert, let me tell you Justin Furstenfeld has a great voice for a rock band that started in the early 2000s and from then on worked their way up to becoming mainstream. My favorite song has to be “Fear” because it talks about how believing in yourself helps you overcome any obstacles standing in the way of your dreams and to not be afraid to chase them.
When it comes to the overall composition of the show itself it was quite astonishing as I saw a lot of light effects that really caught my attention throughout every song and if you saw me in the audience I was on my feet like everyone else with participation. I could not get enough of the rush I felt when Justin dropped a beat, it had me dancing until the concert came to a close, when I was there a lot of my classmates were also quite involved in the concert as well. When I came home that night I was tired from the energy that I used rocking out but all in all it was a great experience. Pretty much every concert I have been to had some form of participation involved, artists like it when their fans are satisfied with the music they are putting out.
Currently Blue October’s latest single “I Hope Your Happy” is playing on Alternative radio stations to gain exposure before heading into commercial rotation, when Amarillo College launched FM90 it provides an avenue for new artists to gain attention. When I was in class that is what my professor talked about, non-commercial stations having that ability, he also talked about the FCC regulations when it comes to on air etiquette and that DJ commentary as well as song lyrics were to be free of language, as even college radio is responsible for this. I learned a lot and it was a great time getting to network with other people of my same interests, it has been a journey from where I was then to where I am now and there is still a lot of great things that lie ahead.
Most recently I have done events and occasionally do radio but the great thing is you can practice your craft to get better and better, I invested in equipment that serves as a home DJ booth.
See you on the airwaves!!
