The Panhandle’s biggest city on the map has it’s fair share when it comes to the different names and themes that people come up with for a specific reason. The names could be based on the outlook or geographic landscape of the area or something that is well known in the area. For instance a celebrity or public figure could get with city council and change the name of a street. Below are a few names Amarillo and the High Plains in general have received over the years.
The Golden Spread
You can usually tell that the region Amarillo sits in is flat and barely has any trees or mountains. The city and places by it sit on what is called the Caprock which is the area between sea level and the mountains. This went with the fact that things are spread out terrain wise in the area. I see hardly any trees out in open country on every corner of the Panhandle so it’s common place for this location.

Yellow City
When you take the word yellow and change it to Spanish language you get Amarillo. You could also pair this name with the Yellow Rose of Texas to commemorate a tribute to Texas History.

Bomb City
This name comes from Amarillo being home to the Pantex plant in the northern part of the Panhandle. The facility is known to create products for nuclear defense purposes with the ability to have these on standby in case we need a line of defense.
Center City
This Mostly represents the downtown district and the stores and restaurants that house the landscape of Amarillo.
That is what makes the nicknames of Amarillo unique. What other names would you like to see?
