Mix tapes are something that are made for personal enjoyment or to give as a gift to someone for a special occasion. The thing that you want to be aware of when making a playlist first and foremost is seeing the demographics and likes of your audience you are catering to even if it’s just a single person. When you create your song list keep this in mind so you know what to make to please your client at the event you are providing music for. If you have specific songs that are to be played at an event you always want to make sure that they get put in your playlist.

The best idea is to mix up what you put into the playlist so the same song doesn’t keep playing over and over. Be sure you have enough music to cover your time schedule so the energy doesn’t run out early. I recommend putting a couple songs for each genre so the list flows smoothly. Be sure to check and see if any dedications are to be made and stay away from singles that are live or acoustic versions. The original version always sounds better than remakes of the song.

Things to keep in mind are how your audience reacts to a particular song, at my gigs I usually study the crowd to see how people are liking what I’m playing. If no people are on the dance floor then I might try another song to see if it puts everyone in a pumped up mood. It all depends on what the event is about since that would be the atmosphere that you would create. Curating a playlist has an art to it so doing them often will help with your skills more.
