If you are looking to break into the field of broadcasting here are some tips to know while you are acquiring those skills necessary to be on the radio.
Know how to have energy in your Voice
On the radio you always want to sound upbeat and tell the audience you really care about what’s happening in the local community. You want to act like the voice of reason is coming out to story tell and inform the listeners on the other end.

Know What the FCC expects on regulations
The government regulates the airwaves for public safety so knowing what you can and can’t do when you broadcast is important. Music is required to have edits when on the radio because language that is offensive is not allowed on the air. DJs are expected to address the public in a manner that is appealing and professional. Station managers usually monitor behavior and make sure the license is protected from having to be revoked.

Stay Alert To Possible Announcments for Public Safety
Picture in your mind severe weather season, you can take this perspective to broadcasting with weather and traffic alerts from the EAS(Emergency Alert System). This is an important aspect for the listener community in which a radio station resides so that awareness can be made of a particular situation.

When Running a Contest or giveaway Know the Protocol
When a station runs a contest to engage with the audience ratings are improved so knowing how to conduct this in an appropriate manner is important. I remember running one for Blue October and I had to fill forms out with listener names and contact information.

Try To Keep Your On-Air Content Local
When you listen to an area radio station the focus you likely are looking for resides in your community. Radio has been challenged with starting syndicated shows especially in the morning work commute. If you are local then keep what you tell your audience relevant to what they are more interested in. For example a concert or event that helps out a city charity near the listening area.
I still see the aspect of local DJs staying around for a long time. Those are my tips for using the airwaves to build a better community.
