WT Adds Bird Scooters to College and City of Canyon

The City of Canyon now has a new way to get around the WT campus and residential neighborhoods. Bird scooters are now able to be rented out and the target users for these is mostly college students going from a dorm to a class during the day. The City says this will make it easier for the community to get around without having to pay for gas money to put in a vehicle. The scooters cost $1 to start the engine and $0.39 for every minute of a single ride.

To use these you walk up to a scooter and scan the QR code with your phone using the Bird app after creating a free account and entering your payment credentials. The app will allow you to report and type of road hazard along the way and a message will be sent to city first responders making the community safer overall. There have been 30 scooters distributed to Canyon neighborhoods and 40 are on the WT campus for student use around campus. The college Student Government Association(SGA) says they have worked hard for several years to get this new program off the ground but ultimately the wait was worth it since the city can use this form of transportation. Senior citizens are another demographic that could use this system if they have limited mobility or something that needs a quicker response instead of driving a car.

In certain places around the city where the scooters are geofenced to where they shut off in places around the downtown square and blocked off areas. These are designed to slow down in certain places where the speed limit is slower to create a safe barrier to pedestrians crossing streets so they can stay safe while getting to a destination. I am happy to see a new choice for the city to get to different places.

I have not had a chance to ride one of these but maybe sometime in the future I can find time to try these out since anyone around the Canyon community has access. The best part is getting to enjoy a nice warm day since you will be on something that is open transportation. Students and other users will have access to helmets and other gear at the WT campus along with the option to use a personal one.
