Since today is Cinco De Mayo I am going to share some history behind this holiday and how it came to be widely celebrated in the U.S and Mexico. A popular tradition is to have Taco Tuesday and Nachos are also a popular choice among people observing the day, in 1862 the Mexican Army won over the French empire at the battle of Puebla with two wars occurring of the same name, the second battle took place in 1863 with Mexico’s capital Mexico City eventually coming to victory, so it basically took two years before the French army was completely defeated. In cities today honoring the holiday consists of parades, concerts and fairs among other things, México is the dominant country for the celebration while gaining other popularity in the 1980s and I find it interesting that beer sales on Cinco De Mayo are almost right in line with Super Bowl Sunday which leads me to believe Americans have respect for the neighboring country to the south.

Common items worn on this day include sombreros, necklaces and bows, tequila is also a staple when it comes to beverages, if you go to Puebla, Mexico today you will find an arts festival with exhibits on display to commemorate the battle which was fought there in the 1860s, now I have not been to the country but I know there are people that have and let me just say it’s cool to think our border has such a rich history behind the celebrations and traditions that are observed.

So Happy Cinco Everyone. Have a good time and keep it safe.
